Industrial Salt Grades Explained
Coarse, fine and rock grades for water softening, de-icing, tanning and chemical processing.

Industrial salt is unrefined rock salt sorted by size and purity.
Coarse grain (5 to 10 mm) is used for water softeners and de-icing roads.
Fine grain is used in tanning, textile dyeing and chemical production.
Rock and lump grades suit brine production and large scale de-icing.
Ask for a Certificate of Analysis to confirm sodium chloride content and moisture before ordering.
Describe the process before choosing a grade
Industrial salt selection starts with the process in which it will be used. Give the supplier your required grain size, acceptable moisture and composition limits, intended quantity and packing. Do not assume that a product described as coarse or fine meets your equipment specification: obtain the actual size range and compare it with your written purchasing requirements.
Use specifications, not colour alone
Colour and appearance are useful identifiers but do not establish whether a salt is suitable for a particular industrial application. Ask for the relevant batch analysis and compare its results with the limits set by your technical team. Food, animal and industrial uses should be assessed separately; a decorative product or an industrial grade should not be treated as food suitable simply because it is made from salt.
Check packing and handling requirements
State how the salt will be received, stored and introduced into your process. Discuss the packing format, quantity per pack and labeling your site needs. Ask whether your requested grade and packing are available together, rather than choosing a size from one option and the price of a different option. Confirm handling and storage requirements with the supplier before ordering.
Write a clear enquiry
Include the intended application, grain size, quality limits, order quantity, packing and destination port. Where available, attach your existing specification so the team can respond to the same criteria. Ask about a sample if your process requires evaluation before a bulk commitment. Availability, price and delivery should be confirmed for the actual enquiry.
